The why
The Kemnal Academies Trust (TKAT) formed a key retainer partnership with Reconome to provide high-quality refurbished tech on an ongoing basis – ensuring schools can access affordable, reliable devices while also advancing their sustainability goals.
This long-term collaboration supports TKAT’s commitment to reducing costs, cutting e-waste, and creating a consistent, centralised approach to IT procurement across all 45 schools in the Trust.
The challenge
- TKAT aimed to standardise and centralise purchasing of a catalogue of high-quality devices for the 45 schools and one large corporate services site within the Trust. As part of this, they put out an RFP for a minimum three-year contract to support their needs and further their sustainability strategy by sourcing more than 4,000 refurbished desktop PCs.
- Devices needed to come with a three-year warranty for all hardware, and to be dispatched in recycled packaging for delivery.
- Suppliers needed to have the capability to provide detailed reporting to TKAT to show the hardware quantities (including cost, individual who requested, date, and delivery address), as well as consolidated invoices with backing data.
3-step approach
- Premier service delivery: Reconome was able to commit to a three-year Return to Base (RTB) warranty on each device, and hassle-free replacement of any devices that developed mechanical faults. The offering also included strict quality control metrics, SLAs on device delivery and servicing, and flexible reporting to extract, compile and communicate the data required by the Trust.
- Sustainability as standard: Detailed reports showing the positive environmental impact of the partnership, including the reduced carbon footprint of repurposing IT devices. As a certified B Corp since 2020, Reconome meets the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency and legal accountability.
- High-quality processes: Refurbishment of devices to a level above and beyond industry standards to deliver exceptional functionality and user experience, and to a minimum Grade A standard in terms of external condition. Reconome is fully ISO accredited, an Environment Agency registered Waste Carrier and permitted to carry out the repair or refurbishment of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment under waste exemption T11.
The results and environmental impact

“Rainham School for Girls needed to replace a media suite of computers. Reconome tested and built an affordable suite of machines, with the school’s budget and performance requirements in mind, which arrived in excellent condition, were easy to set up, and have performed flawlessly.”
– Alan May, TKAT’s Regional IT Manager
“Reconome always prioritises strategic goals to ensure the most efficient environmental and financially sustainable solution for our trust. The ability to customise devices, as well as supply processes, to meet our requirements, is second to none.”
– Chris Clarke the Director of IT, TKAT
